Initiative

Page history last edited by MindBomber 2 yrs ago

Initiative often refers to one of two interrelated things: either the printed number in the upper left-hand corner of every support card, or the "Determine Initiative" step of the Detailed Round Sequence.

Determine Initiative

Rounds One through Four

At the start of every Round, players Reveal a support card (except Round 5; see below). Once these cards have been revealed, their continuous effects come into play. This is an important designation, as cards like Blossius of Cumae or Okíčhize Čhaŋnúŋpa have such effects that would affect initiative. Then, any card abilities that occur "before initiative is determined," such as Hadis Kaiim, are processed.

Once this point is reached, all players look at the printed initiative number on the newly-revealed support card. Taking any initiative modifiers into effect, the player with the highest initiative value "wins" initiative. Everyone else "loses" initiative. When this happens, card abilities that trigger off winning or losing initiative kick in, followed by "after initiative is determined" abilities.

As a sidenote, certain cards (Tangaroa, for example) change the requirement for determining initiative. In these cases, the person who better fulfills the conditions, and would take the resulting first Turn, is the one who "wins" initiative.

Initiative in Round Five

The fifth round in an Anachronism game is different from the rest. Besides being the final round, it's the only one that does not have a support card revealed at the start of it. Instead, as stated in the rulebook:

In the fifth Round, because all Support Cards are revealed, both players’ Initiative values are null and are tied. As with other ties, the Warrior with higher Experience wins the tie and therefore goes first.

The idea of "null" is very important, as many card abilities key off initiative values (notable examples include Sahm and Odin). The definition of null, according to the rulebook:

Null: Null is a non–existent value. Null is neither greater nor less than any other value and cannot have any number added to or subtracted from it.
