Set 8 is the "current" set in Anachronism; it was expected to be released in 2007. This set features The Carthaginians and The African Kingdoms, as well as revisits of The Britons and The Romans. However, financing and restructuring issues within TriKing prevented this Set from hitting the store shelves. Instead, the text versions of cards are being released, and legalized for tournament play.

Status of Set 8
Currently, Anachronism and TriKing have entered a bit of a rough patch, financially. It has been the better part of a year since Set 7's release, and there is no timetable for Set 8. Michael Brown of TriKing has mentioned that plans are in place to relaunch Anachronism, with a stronger business model. What this Anachronism 2.0 might signify for existing sets is unknown. The common perception is that Set 8 will not see the light of day -- at the very least, not in its current form.
Legality of Set 8
Despite its status, Set 8 is being released pack-by-pack on the Anachronism forums. The game's lead developer, Steve McLaughlin (a.k.a. "Shteevie"), is the one releasing the card texts and sanctioning them for player use:
Anachronism has been without an official release for quite some time now, and most people have figured out that the game as we know it now has reached something of a conclusion. I have been releasing Set 8 data to the players in some [hopefully] fun contests, because otherwise, the players may have never seen these cards.
...
In the meantime, the best thing any of us can do to promote Anachronism is simply to continue enjoying it. There are no new cards to buy, sadly, but there are new cards to play with.
From here out, all Set 8 cards spoiled on these forums are legal for tournament play as of become legal on 10/1/2007. All future released cards will become legal 1 week after they are released.
