The Germanic

Page history last edited by MindBomber 2 yrs ago

The Germanic tribes were one of the four Cultures in Set 3 of Anachronism.

"Germanic" is a description that categorizes a broad range of European peoples and languages. Though Germanic tribes would develop into what are nowadays considered separate cultures, Germanic warriors in Anachronism represent a multitude of pre-Carolingian tribes.

Brief History

The Germani were a group of tribes that spoke a common language. Ancient historians used the term to differentiate them from the other group of barbarians, the Celts. Then again, The Greeks tended to think anyone who drank their wine undiluted was a barbarian.

The proto-Germanic language spoken by these tribes is what united them; as various tribes migrated, their dialects developed into other languages. Many resulting and disparate European cultures sprang from Germanic precedents: the tribes that migrated north (including the Geats) eventually became The Norse (including Swedes and Danes). The Visigoths spiraled west into Iberia (eventual home of The Spanish), Ostrogoths east; The French got their name from the Franks, the tribe from whence came Charlemagne (or Karl der Große). Truly, the list could go on for a while.

The Germanic tribes were a constant thorn in the side of the Romans. On one hand, it was nice to have them around - when the Huns came crashing through Europe, the Germanic people blunted the advance. On the other... well, it is the Goths, a Germanic tribe, that get credit for the downfall of Rome. Interestingly enough, the Germanic people became the new Rome - the aforementioned Karl der Große became the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.

But that's a whole 'nother culture.
